CREATING A LEADED PANEL

Once a design has been finalised with the client and the glass chosen, a full scale cutting template is produced.

This template is used to accurately cut each piece of glass to the required shape.

The glass pieces are checked to ensure a good fit and any adjustment is done now.

Edging leads are positioned on two sides first and then the glass and lead can be gradually built up.

Horseshoe nails hold the work in place as more and more pieces are added.

The order in which the pieces of glass are fitted is very important.

The final pieces are eased in.

And held in place before the two remaining edge leads are fitted.

The panel is then soldered at every joint and very carefully turned over and soldered on the reverse. The panel is still quite fragile at this point.

Leaded light cement is forced under the lead flanges around each piece of glass to form a weatherproof seal and to strengthen the panel.

After leaving the panel to dry, it is polished and the lead and solder joints are blacked down. The panel is then ready for installation.
